Barnacles can attach themselves onto all kinds of hard surfaces including glass and even plastic. While the thought that they can use our trash as a base on which to build their home may seem inspiring from an ecological perspective, there is evidence that the barnacle covered floating rafts of plastic trash are creating micro habitats which support the dispersal of marine organisms into foreign environments, with the potential to become invasive, to a much higher degree than the natural vectors that break down more quickly.
